Selection of most efficient chemicals for water treatment
Summary
The Saratovskoe water reservoir has been the main water source of the Samara public water supply. The municipal water treatment facilities have been built after typical projects and designed for clarification and disinfection of moderately polluted water. Lately sharp suspended solids reduction and organic pollution increase (mainly of natural origin) in the water source have been observed. During flood periods technogenic pollution (surfactants) is present, the concentration of manganese increases, phenol is found. At low water temperature, high color and permanganate value higher doses of chlorine and coagulant are required. Coagulation at low temperatures is inhibited which results in the concentration of residual aluminium and permanganate value exceeding the maximum permissible levels. Higher chlorine dosages cause higher concentrations of chloroorganics in water. Therefore a chemical for using during flood periods that will provide for the required quality of water shall be selected. The results of the laboratory studies of selecting the chemical type and optimum dosage for water purification from the Saratovskoe water reservoir during flood periods are presented. Eighteen coagulant trademarks manufactured by domestic and foreign producers were investigated. The optimum dosages of coagulant and flocculant were defined. From the coagulant samples presented two were selected that could provide for the maximum drinking water clarification at minimum levels of residual aluminium and permanganate value. The final choice can be made on the basis of the technical and economic calculations taking into account the chemical price, delivery cost and required water quality.

Gabion filtration facilities for surface runoff treatment
Summary
The design and characteristics of gabion filtration treatment facilities developed and designed by the specialists of «ECOLANDSHAFT-XXI century» NPO LLC are presented. The analysis of wastewater and effluent samples collected at different seasons of the year from the inlet and outlet of the different gabion facilities showed that the efficiency of treatment both in terms of suspended solids and oil products and COD, BOD5 met the maximum permissible pollutant concentrations set for fishery waters. Gabion facilities are open gravity facilities, which do not require any chemicals, pumps, electricity or premises for their operation. They include two sections, each of them having four treatment stages: accumulating settling tank; filtration chamber with granular bed; bioplato; filtration chamber with sorbent. Gabion facilities include bioplato as a mandatory and very important element for treatment which is a shallow impoundment seeded with macrophytes and which ensures removing a number of pollutants. Due to the use of gabions, bioplato and chemical free treatment the gabion facilities can be qualified as nature like facilities which can be retrofitted into the landscape and have an attractive look becoming a part of the landscape. By now more than 120 gabion filtration treatment facilities with up to 15 years service time have been designed and built. The facilities provide for the treatment of surface runoff from highways, industrial sites of technology and industrial parks.

Study of the quality of supernatant separated in the process of sludge thickening at the water treatment plant in Rostov-on-Don
Summary
The results of studying the qualitative and quantitative composition of supernatant separated from the sludge after sedimentation tanks washing at the water treatment plant in Rostov-on-Don. The chemical water analysis carried out in accordance with Standard Methods showed that the given effluent type does not meet the requirements set to the discharge into the municipal sewer and poses a threat to the environment. In connection with this the technology of wash water reuse was chosen as the most efficient under the given conditions. It provides for the effluent returning into the mainstream of the water to be treated or using it for the water plant needs. At that the effluent organoleptic properties shall be considered: at 5 hours sedimentation of sludge with 5–40 g/dm3 concentration it can be classified as low-turbid, medium or high colored (depending on the season of sludge generation in the sedimentation tanks). Increasing the time of supernatant retention above the sludge (up to 120 hours) insignificantly improves the clarification and decoloration efficiency that is indicative of the presence of highly dispersive and dissolved substances highly resistive to sedimentation in supernatant. Improving significantly the supernatant quality is possible by sludge pre-conditioning with lime or cationic polyacrylamides.

Innovative energy efficient and resource-saving technology of removing ammonium from wastewater under anaerobic-anoxic conditions
Summary
The specialists of «Mosvodokanal» JSC have developed the technologies of ammonium oxidation under anoxic conditions: double-reactor for low temperatures and single-reactor for 30–37 °С. The technology for the operation at 10–25 °С is performed by bacteria (discovered in «Mosvodokanal» JSC) Сandidatus Аnammoxomicrobium moscowii, fixed to the bed. The rate of nitrogen removal is 50 g/(m3·day) of the reactor. The technology for warm wastewater treatment is performed by new bacteria Сandidatus Jettenia moscovienalis, fixed to the bed; the rate of nitrogen removal is 0.47 kg/(m3·day). The use of continuous flow and fixed feed increases the output of the reactor to 0.8 kg/(m3·day). Considering the high economic attractiveness and efficiency of the technology it could be expected that in the very near future the technology will become a frequent practice in wastewater treatment. For the development of the industrial-scale technology a grant was awarded within the frames of the Federal special-purpose program «Research and development for the priority orientations of the development of the scientific and technology sector in Russia for 2014–2020». Common problems at water treatment facilities and ways to address them
Summary
Due to the anthropogenic factors, the quality of surface water is subject to rapid, mainly negative, changes; therefore, water treatment plants not always can meet the standards of the drinking water quality. Currently, many water treatment facilities are in need of upgrade, re-technologization and even reconstruction. In addition, significant changes in the actual water supply by the water facilities (decreasing, as a rule) do not always produce a positive effect on the technical and economic indicators of the water treatment facilities. Problems arising during the operation of the water treatment facilities at all stages of surface water purification – microfiltration, chemical treatment, mixing with chemicals and flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and wash water treatment are summarized. The methods used by MY PROJECT JSC in its projects to address such problems as the lack of the treatment efficacy, overspending of chemicals, short filter cycle, large water losses for process needs, discharge of untreated wash water, high purification cost are considered.

Reconstruction of the facilities for reusing wash water from de-ironing plant filters
Summary
The object of the study is wash water from multi-layer rapid filters of a deironing plant and flocculant solution used for the wash water treatment. The purpose of the work is developing an optimal process flow scheme for the treatment of wash water for the subsequent reconstruction of the facilities for wash water treatment at the deironing plant in Tomsk. In the course of work, experimental studies were carried out of the interaction of the wash water generated after washing the rapid filters of the artesian water deironing plant in Tomsk with flocculant solution of various concentrations. As a result of the study, the optimal process flow scheme for the wash water treatment was selected; the dose of the flocculant solution was 0.3 g/m3 and the concentration of the flocculant solution was 0.05%. The extent of adoption was as follows: the results of the work were used in the reconstruction project of the wash water treatment facilities at the de-ironing plant in Tomsk. The data on the flocculant dose and concentration of the flocculant solution will be used in the operation of the facilities after the reconstruction. The effectiveness of the flocculant solution is determined by the degree of water clarification visually and in a lab environment by determining the concentration of iron oxide in clarified water. The economic efficiency of the selected process flow scheme is due to the return of 7200 m3/day of water for reuse saving more than 7% of the daily costs for water abstraction.
