Water sludge: composition, properties, disposal in wastewater treatment (a review)
Summary
Advanced water treatment schemes are inevitably associated with water sludge generation, the volume of which becomes a separate problem that is comparable to the scale of the actual production of drinking water. In this regard, utilization of water sludge is considered today as a priority task in the research and development in this area. Based on the results of almost thirty years of studies, the main areas of potential use of water sludge have been identified; one of them being water and wastewater treatment. The results of numerous studies evidence the perspectiveness of using water sludge as an adsorbent of phosphates, arsenic, and also heavy metals: Cu, Cd, Cr, Co, Pb, Hg, Zn, Ni, V, Mo, Ga, and Se. Under the conditions of pilot tests, studies were conducted on the extraction of coagulants from water sludge, and on the direct use of water sludge as a coagulant, as well as on its use for enhancing excess activated sludge dewatering. Using water sludge in the foundation of bioengineering facilities, as well as a catalyst for the activation of persulfate and peroxomonosulfate in the destruction of organic micropollutants in the aquatic environment also made good results.

The use of soils with addition of water and wastewater sludge for industrial crop cultivation
Summary
Industrial crop cultivation for biofuel production with the use of municipal solid wastes as fertilizers is a promising technique of improving energy efficiency. Comprehensive large-scale studies of technical crop sowing (false saffron, spring rape, false flax, brittle willow) were carried out on an experimental field with soil application of water and wastewater sludge. It was shown that soil application of sludges under oil-plants provided for the significant additional yield of rape, false flax and false saffron. The yield of tree crops was higher with the application of wastewater sludge; whereas technical herbage crops (false saffron, false flax, rape) showed higher yield with water sludge application. Under unfavorable weather conditions the application of sludge enhances the drought resistance of crops. When cultivating oil-plants on soils with high pollution concentration the seeds do not absorb hazardous substances; therefore no special safety measures are required when processing the plants for biofuel production.

Treatment and Utilization of Wash Water of High-Rate Filters of Deferrization Stations
Summary
Issues of the intensification of coagulation treatment processes of wash water of the deferrization station’s high-rate filters are considered. Shortcomings of the existing flow chart of treatment and the reuse of wash water of filtration stations are exposed. The scheme of the unit and results of experimental studies for selection of an efficient reagent, treatment and utilization of filters’ wash water are presented. A new technology of reagent clarification and multiple use of deferrization station’s wash water is offered.

Improving the technology of strong sulfide wastewater treatment
Summary
The theoretically justified ways of improving the technology of deactivation of sulfide-alkaline wastewater generated in the tannery process cycle, during gas production, oil refining etc. are suggested. The development of ferro-catalytic sulfide oxidation with atmospheric oxygen regeneration of iron hydroxide that is circulating in the wastewater treatment process is a perspective direction in the management of recycled technology potential that ensures complete elimination of industrial emissions of hydrogen sulfide to the environment.

Utilization of Sludge of Water Supply Treatment Facilities
Summary
A possibility of the use of sludge of potable water supply treatment facilities for production of pottery is investigated. Technological tests show that the use of sludge of the Khabarovsk’s treatment facilities as additives to common clays in a dose up to 15% of raw material weight makes it possible to solve a problem of their utilization without a decrease in quality of a produced product. The possibility of the use of treatment facilities sludge in a dose from 3 to 15% as alloy additives making it possible to improve plasticity of ceramic mass, to improve conditions of its sintering, to reduce parameters of shrinkage at all technological stages of preparation of raw materials and manufacturing of products, to reduce the size of pores generated and to improve indices of water-absorbing ability is established.
