History of the establishment and development of the sewer system of the city district of Samara
Summary
The history of establishing and developing the municipal sewer system in the city of Samara in the 19th century is presented. Following the construction of a public water supply system in 1886, a need for a public sewer system in Samara also arose; however, the City Council had been a long while considering the possibility of its construction due to the lack of finance for the construction of expensive structures. In 1906, the owner of the Zhigulevskii brewery, Alfred Filippovich Vakano, financed project drafting and held negotiations with V. G. Lindley, German engineer, who had extensive experience in the construction of sewer structures in Europe. In 1909, the City Council approved the Lindley’s project in full. By October 1909, a test section of the sewer system, four miles long, was built, and then the construction of the sewer system covered the entire city center. Commissioning of the municipal sewer network significantly improved the sanitary condition of Samara. The further development took place in the post-war years, and in the late 1960s the construction of the largest sewer complex in the country was launched in Samara (at that time the city of Kuibyshev). In 1974, the municipal wastewater treatment facilities were commissioned. In 2013, the specialists of Samarskie Kommunal’nye Sistemy, LLC initiated the first reconstruction of the treatment facilities since they needed not just repairs, but a major upgrade. Following the first stage of the reconstruction, the treatment facilities modernization project was included in the Federal Project «The Volga Rehabilitation». Nowadays, the municipal wastewater treatment facilities are a safe and comfortable production environment.

Basic process solutions for upgrading the municipal wastewater treatment facilities: wastewater secondary settling with tertiary treatment by filtration and chemical phosphorus removal
Summary
The process solutions introduced at the Samara Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facilities in accordance with the best available technologies are considered. In the process of the reconstruction new screens buildings were built. In the volume of the existing aeration tanks biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds following the Cape town University technology with an energy efficient system of compressed air supply, the additional chemical phosphorus removal was implemented. The secondary settling tanks were converted into the filtration settlers with floating media. A UV disinfection plant was commissioned; furthermore, cleaning of malodorous emissions from the process units was provided. The design capacity of the upgraded facilities is 640 thousand m3/day. In prospect Samarskie Kommunal’nye Sistemy, LLC, the operator, within the frames of the Program of improving the environmental efficiency, will have to take measures on improving the operation of the treatment facilities that have not been included into the upgrade project because of the lack of finance. These measures include modernization of the system of removing activated sludge from the secondary settlers and also removing from them algae during the blooming period. The need of the fastest adoption of GOST on commissioning wastewater treatment facilities is justified.

Results of the mathematical simulation of wastewater treatment processes in aeration tanks at the Samara Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facilities during the upgrade and commissioning
Summary
The results of mathematical simulation of the operation of the existing biological wastewater treatment facilities using POTENTIAL software that was used for 10 months to optimize the operation of aeration tanks during the upgrade and commissioning are presented. The data on the quantitative and qualitative composition of wastewater supplied to the aeration tanks adopted in the project are compared with the actual data for the period 2023–2024. Calculation of the actual values of the growth and aerobic age of the activated sludge using the formulas included into the POTENTIAL software showed that the sustained required quality of the effluent in relation to ammonium and nitrites was observed with an aerobic age of activated sludge of 24.1–27 days and a wastewater temperature of 19.1–24.8°C, provided the concentration of N–NH4 was less than 1 mg/l, and N–NO2 was less than 0.1 mg/l. As a result of calibration and verification of the mathematical model embedded in POTENTIAL software, the values of kinetic constants and coefficients were selected for a separate process line «aeration tank No. 7 – secondary settling tank No. 5» resulting in predicting the operation of the aeration tanks with a high degree of accuracy (deviations between the calculated and actual data were less than 8%).

Study of the effect of ampicillin on the functional state of activated sludge at multiple exposure
Summary
The widespread use of antibiotics in medicine and veterinary science results in an increase in their production, which contributes to the occurrence and accumulation of these drugs in the surrounding aquatic environment. Antibiotics, getting into wastewater, disturb the degradation of organic matter by microorganisms of activated sludge which results in a decrease in the functional state of activated sludge, and also contributes to the development of multiresistant strains of bacteria. In this regard, it is important to estimate the impact of antibiotics on the hydroecosystem of the treatment facilities. Estimation of the functional state of activated sludge of biological treatment facilities is possible using hydrobiological analysis. Hydrochemical indicators of activated sludge, quantitative calculation of activated sludge organisms provides for monitoring the state of the biological wastewater treatment process. The results of estimating the effect of ampicillin on the functional state of activated sludge at multiple exposure are presented. Activated sludge of the Samara wastewater treatment facilities was used as test organisms. The betalactam antibiotic ampicillin served as the material for the study. The antibiotic was added every 24 hours at a concentration of 100 mg per 1g of activated sludge. Incubation of activated sludge was carried out at a temperature of 25°C for 72 hours at continuous aeration. Samples of activated sludge without antibiotic addition served as a control. During the experiment, the hydrochemical characteristics and species composition of the activated sludge biocenosis were estimated. It was shown that ampicillin added multiple times, had a negative effect on the functional state of activated sludge aggravating the sedimentation properties and reducing the species diversity of activated sludge.

Designing an electronic network and a hydraulic model of the wastewater disposal system of the Urban District of Samara
Summary
For the purpose of improving the efficiency of the wastewater disposal system control in the Urban District of Samara, along with providing for the reliable operation and mitigation of the negative impact on the environment in the context of the urban area development, the specialists of Samarskie Kommunal’nye Sistemy, LLC, are designing and using in their work an electronic network and a hydraulic model of the municipal sewer system and its structures. However, prior to developing and launching the model operation, a detailed analysis of the current condition of the wastewater disposal system (passportization), arrangement of the interaction of the subdivisions on the data updating (actualization), provision of the data entry on the calculated nodal loads and data on the occurring blockages are needed. The correct simulation can provide for the significant improvement of the system operation efficiency, mitigation of the flooding risks and improvement of the general control of the water resources. Using these technologies will not only contribute to the sustainable development of the urban infrastructure, but also provide for the environmental protection and public health.

Case study of using MI 2220-13 method for measuring wastewater flow rate in the feed channels of the aeration tanks at the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facilities
Summary
Case study of using MI 2220-13 «Method of measuring in gravity water pipelines by the filling level with preliminary calibration of the measuring section» for measuring wastewater flow rate in the feed channels of the aeration tanks at the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facilities of the Urban District of Samara is considered. The sequence of steps and operations of calibrating and finding the dependence of the flow rate on the measured level in the feed channel of the aeration tank is presented. The advantages of using this method lie in the possibility of determining the water flow rate from the measured level value using relatively simple and inexpensive level sensors. This approach is actively used by engineering companies while designing, including treatment facilities; however, at the stage of commissioning, the organizations responsible for commissioning often experience problems with setting up and debugging the operation of such flow meters.
