Influence of Tear-and-Wear of Vertical Pumps on Reliability, Safety and Power Consumption of Sewerage Pumping Stations
Summary
Results of the study of influence of tear-and-wear of vertical pumps on reliability, safety and power consumption of sewerage pumping stations on the example of the Main pumping station of the Central aeration station of St. Petersburg are presented. Principal points of the methods of calculation of reliability of pumping stations operation are expounded. The methodology formalized with the use of programs for a computer can be applied for concrete calculations of reliability of such pumping stations. The safety of a wastewater disposal system, conditions of urban human environment, ground water, water basins, and profitability of the SUE St. Petersburg Vodokanal’s enterprises depend on reliability of operation of stations with a designed discharge rate of up to 1,5 mill. m3/day.

Air contamination monitoring in deep water and sewer manholes
Summary
The results of improving the design of fill media made of mesh plastic tubes alongside with the analysis of the fill media design and process characteristics are presented. It is shown that the dominant factors affecting water cooling in fill media are the surface shape and dimensions that ensure the interaction of water and air flows. The design developed jointly by NII VODGEO OJSC and Techvodpolymer Ltd., that is the new version of Fleron long tubular mesh elements is presented. Depending on the operating conditions of the cooling tower the fill media can be installed either in horizontal, or vertical or inclined position. With specific reference it is shown that at similar water temperature at the input of the cooling tower FleronN fill media ensures 1.6 water concentrations higher compared to BO-65 basic fill media or allows to reduce cooled water temperature by 2.5°C.

Assessment of safety and risk of flooding of urban industrial territories: expert-analytical method
Summary
The main provisions of the expert-analytical method for assessing the risk of hazardous processes are stated; the method formed the basis for the development of a number of methodological recommendations and state standards. On the basis of this method, a technique is proposed for assessing the safety and risk of one of the dangerous natural-technogenic processes – flooding of urban industrial territories. The main factors of the harmful impact of this process on the structures located in such territories are indicated. It is shown how risks and damages from flooding of urban industrial territories can be estimated on the basis of the general methodological approach to assessing risks from hazardous techno-natural processes. As a result, criteria for safety and risk of flooding were obtained and a mechanism for assessing the risk of flooding was developed. The features of the assessment of the risk from flooding of urban industrial territories at the federal, regional and local levels are revealed.

Introduction of safe technologies of water disinfection and elimination of hazardous industrial facilities
Summary
The problems related to the use of liquid chlorine for drinking and wastewater disinfection at the «Rostovvodokanal» JSC facilities in the city of Rostov-on-Don are considered. It is pointed to preventing the operation of hazardous industrial facilities within the city boundaries. Alternative technologies of drinking water disinfection are considered. The comparison of international and domestic drinking water disinfection equipment with the use of low concentrated sodium hypochlorite solution was made. The process and technical solution suggested by «Ecofes» SPE was chosen. The question on the inadequacy and imperfection of the water disinfection technology was raised. It was decided to use ultraviolet irradiation at the second stage of water disinfection. «LIT» Trading Company LLC was chosen as a principle supplier. It was also decided to abandon disinfection of effluents with chlorine. At present within the frames of the integrated investment projects based on PPP principle «Rostovvodokanal» JSC is constructing and operating facilities that ensure efficient and safe drinking water and effluent disinfection.

Manufacturing nonhazardous polyvinylchloride-based materials
Аннотация
Polyvinylchloride has been widely used in manufacturing drinking water pipes, medical devices and foodstuff packing. In these areas special requirements are imposed on the materials applied – the absence of harmful effect on the contact media. A detailed analysis of the factors effecting the production and use of nonhazardous polyvinylchloride-based materials is presented. The analysis of the international experience (USA, Europe) of the countries where polyvinylchloride is hugely more used than in Russia has been carried out. The main conclusion was the requirement of avoiding the addition of any toxic and hazardous substances into polyvinylchloride. At present most of polyvinylchloride produced in the world is used in manufacturing rigid pipes for drinking water. The basic advantages of these pipes compared to the pipes made of other polymers are higher strength, lifetime and microbiological persistence. Pipes made of polyvinylchloride are sole polymer pipes with long term operation actually proved in practice and not by calculations. In North America polyvinylchloride pipes have been in operation already for more than 40 years and have not lost their field performance. The innovative technologies of pipe modification by the biaxial orientation method provide for improving their rigidity and strength, as well as for reducing the wall thickness and saving the material consumption. Owing to the great number of polyvinylchloride trade marks in production that are nonhazardous in contact with drinking water and foodstuff the interest to these polymers has been growing in Russia too. The absence of harmful substances emission from these materials has been monitored by the sanitary and hygienic control authorities.

Estimation of reliability, safety and investment efficiency of a wastewater disposal system
Summary
Basic principles of the procedure of estimating reliability and safety of wastewater transportation for treatment at reduced operational lifetime investments by the example of a sewerage network in Osinovaya Roscha settlement of the Leningrad Region are presented. The feasibility study of a sewerage network project design first defines the probability safety characteristics for each of the network elements; then probability and parametric reliability characteristics are determined. Hereafter the optimal network design is selected with the help of the said characteristics.

Expert and analytical assessment of the safety and risk in analyzing the hazardous impact of techno-natural processes on the facilities and environment
Summary
In accordance with the general provisions of the expert-analytical methodology for assessing the risk of hazardous impact of techno-natural processes of various origin on the facilities and environment, a method for calculating the risks of techno-natural processes is proposed. The method is based on a detailed analysis of research materials on the hazard level of processes and vulnerability of the facilities and environment, a quantitative assessment of the hazard level and degree of vulnerability, followed by the use of probit analysis to calculate the formation of risks. For the classification of safety and risk levels adopted for work, the criteria are determined and their values are defined that provide for assessing the levels of safety and risks of hazardous techno-natural processes of various origin. The proposed method for assessing the risks of techno-natural processes is illustrated by a more detailed study of the classification and assessment of the safety and risks of hydraulic engineering structures of different categories.
