The use of soils with addition of water and wastewater sludge for industrial crop cultivation
Summary
Industrial crop cultivation for biofuel production with the use of municipal solid wastes as fertilizers is a promising technique of improving energy efficiency. Comprehensive large-scale studies of technical crop sowing (false saffron, spring rape, false flax, brittle willow) were carried out on an experimental field with soil application of water and wastewater sludge. It was shown that soil application of sludges under oil-plants provided for the significant additional yield of rape, false flax and false saffron. The yield of tree crops was higher with the application of wastewater sludge; whereas technical herbage crops (false saffron, false flax, rape) showed higher yield with water sludge application. Under unfavorable weather conditions the application of sludge enhances the drought resistance of crops. When cultivating oil-plants on soils with high pollution concentration the seeds do not absorb hazardous substances; therefore no special safety measures are required when processing the plants for biofuel production.

Operational Experience of a Shop of Mechanical Dewatering of Water Treatment Sludge at the Eastern Water Treatment Station
Summary
From January, 2010 the facilities for processing of water treatment sludge operate at the Eastern water treatment station of the Moscow State Unitary Enterprise Mosvodokanal (MSUE). The facilities include settling tank-sludge thickeners, drum thickeners, and centrifuges. The sludge treatment facilities operate round-the-clock. The operational experience shows that influent wastewater is characterized by significant irregularity during the day both by flow rate and by quality. In this connection there was the search for both optimal operating conditions of the facilities and optimal reagents making it possible to achieve the maximum efficiency of dewatering at preservation of acceptable quality of wastewater disposed.

Repeated Use of Supernatant Water Generated in the Course of Treatment of Sludge from Water Treatment Plants
Summary
Results of the laboratory investigation of the process of treatment of flows generated in the course of treatment of sludge at water treatment plants using the flocculants of different types are presented. Two flocculants used at the Moscow State Unitary Enterprise Mosvodokanal, Praestol TR-650 and BC-852, have been evaluated. A few flocculants making it possible to treat the flows (discharges) maximally have been also selected for comparison. An assessment of influence of addition of flows to influent water coming to the facilities of the Eastern water treatment station has been made. Results obtained confirm the necessity of preliminary treatment of flows with flocculants before their supply to the head of facilities. When untreated flows are added the necessity of increasing the doses of reagents used may arise.

Improving the processes of wash water and water sludge treatment at the water treatment plants of Novosibirsk
Summary
For two years studies of wash water and water sludge treatment processes were carried out at the two biggest water treatment plants of the city of Novosibirsk. The research results allowed framing the main directions of further utilization of wash water and water sludge. Taking into account the existing practice of operating the plants located on the opposite banks of the river Ob separate treatment of the wash water from the rapid filters and wastewater (blowing water) from horizontal settling tanks, mixing and flocculation chambers was suggested. Wash water from rapid filters purified to the quality of drinking water passes through the surge tank and is fed into the clean water tank of the water treatment plant; whereas wastewater from the sludge thickener settlers after mechanical treatment or without any treatment is discharged into the municipal sewer. Part of wastewater from the sludge thickener after treatment is processed together with filter wash water in specially designed or horizontal settlers and rapid filters isolated from the main process scheme. The suggested process solution will provide for eliminating wash water and water sludge disposal into the water bodies. The results of the experimental studies provided for determining the main technical characteristics of the operation of the wash water and water sludge treatment facilities; engineering institutions were given the recommendations on detailed designing. Putting into operation the wash water and water sludge treatment system will provide for the solution of the important environmental task for the third largest city in Russia.
