Eternal engine of progress
Summary
The quality of water supply and wastewater disposal services over the first twenty years of the 21st century has brought SUE «Vodokanal of St. Petersburg» to a new level of development owing to the introduction of innovative technologies in water supply and wastewater disposal systems. The use of technologies, such as two-stage disinfection of drinking water, odor control of landfills, geotubing, the use of Flottweg centrifuges, powdered one-component flocculant, powdered activated carbon, the introduction of a precipitation measurement system, were carried out with the active participation of Fedor Ivanovich Lobanov, Assistant to the General Director of SUE «Vodokanal of St. Petersburg» on dealing with industries, who turned 80 in November 2021.

The use of soils with addition of water and wastewater sludge for industrial crop cultivation
Summary
Industrial crop cultivation for biofuel production with the use of municipal solid wastes as fertilizers is a promising technique of improving energy efficiency. Comprehensive large-scale studies of technical crop sowing (false saffron, spring rape, false flax, brittle willow) were carried out on an experimental field with soil application of water and wastewater sludge. It was shown that soil application of sludges under oil-plants provided for the significant additional yield of rape, false flax and false saffron. The yield of tree crops was higher with the application of wastewater sludge; whereas technical herbage crops (false saffron, false flax, rape) showed higher yield with water sludge application. Under unfavorable weather conditions the application of sludge enhances the drought resistance of crops. When cultivating oil-plants on soils with high pollution concentration the seeds do not absorb hazardous substances; therefore no special safety measures are required when processing the plants for biofuel production.

Investigation of properties of new soils produced from water sludge
Summary
The properties of soil produced from the sludge generated at the water treatment plants have been investigated. A new method of soil production has been developed. Biotesting with the use of two biotests (Ceriodaphniaand Infusoria) revealed some admissible soil toxicity while water stability was assessed as excellent. The comprehensive physical analysis showed that the addition of water sludge into loam soil enhances active processes of structure formation. The soil is well structured, resistant to unfavorable mechanical, physical and chemical impacts including acid-based solutions. The presented soil is recommended for grassplot formation as well as for biofuel crop cultivation. The grassplots formed with the new type of soil showed rather high resistance to drying up during the extremely hot summer of 2010.

New national standards for the wastewater sludge utilization and disposal
Summary
The new Russian Federation standards have been developed: GOST R 54534-2011 «Resources conservation. Wastewater sludges. Requirements to the utilization for disturbed lands reclamation»; GOST R 5453-2011 «Resources conservation. Wastewater sludges. Requirements to the disposal to landfills». The standards set the requirements to wastewater sludge when used for disturbed lands remediation and landfilling. Different methods of sludge treatment that provide for meeting the requirements set by the standards including natural seasoning on stabilization beds, blending with inert materials, composting with organic filler etc. are considered.
