Operating activities of EKOFES SPE LLC

Summary

The paper concentrates on the operating activities of EKOFES SPE LLC. The main directions and results of operating, design, research and innovation activities in the field of developing process and structural concepts for improving the quality of purification and disinfection of water at the facilities are considered. The accumulated long-term experience in retrofitting and upgrading chlorination plants, building new structures for electrolysis stations and equipment assembling, as well as numerous successfully functioning turnkey projects provide for our enterprise coming out to the advanced positions taking the lead in the domestic market of manufacturers and adjusters of electrochlorine equipment. The enterprise has its own production facilities for manufacturing and quality control of anode plates coated with platinum group metal oxides for electrolyzers of any complexity and productivity. EKOFFES SPE LLC is a financially stable and sustainable enterprise confidently operating in the water treatment market, being the center of a group of scientific, design and production companies, where the principle of integration and cooperation with scientific and educational institutions is adopted, where production and the university actively interact to improve the quality of education of students, young professionals and scientists, laying a high personnel potential in science and production, as a common educational, pedagogical, research and production community.

Environmental problems of the water use in the southern subjects of the Russian Federation

Summary

The current state of the global freshwater consumption along with the trend of this factor over the past 125 years are considered. The data on the freshwater use in various countries and regions are provided, with the focus on Russia and its federal districts. The effect of water reservoirs and melioration systems on the water consumption along with the problems related to the climate change and environmental safety, are analyzed. A further increase in global water consumption is predicted, which emphasizes the need for the sustainable water resource management. Legal norms governing the safety of the hydraulic structures and further prospects for the development of rulemaking are discussed.

Development and introduction of anodes (OIRTA-Pd) based
on palladium oxide for the production of sodium hypochlorite

Summary

The results of collaborative work of PAO GMK Norill’skii Nikel’and EKOFES SPE LLC on the development of new titanium anodes (MMO electrodes) with an electrochemically active metal oxide coating based on palladium oxide (OIRTA-Pd) are presented. Titanium anodes are designed for the production of sodium hypochlorite, which is in high demand in water treatment technologies as a disinfectant replacing environmentally hazardous liquid chlorine. The results of studying the properties of electrodes with coatings of different oxide compositions and percentage ratios of platinum group metals in them, as well as the results of the production tests of prototypes of the developed electrodes are presented. It is established that palladium oxide in the coating composition improves the selectivity of active chlorine formation and increases the corrosion resistance of the electrodes contributing to an increase in the service life of the anode. The OIRTA-Pd composition is likely to become viable for manufacturing application owing to the improved characteristics relative to the composition of the reference coatings ORTA and OIRTA; whereas, in terms of the specific energy consumption indicator, it has characteristics superior to analogs – 3.72 kW·h/kg. In addition to the above, the voltage of the industrial electrolyzer is 5.6% lower compared to OIRTA. The developed OIRTA-Pd electrodes have a manufacturing cost comparable to OIRTA and a lower life cycle cost.

Developing and retrofitting an electrolysis plant at the nuclear power station in Egypt: from research studies to the production implementation

Summary

The paper dwells upon the generic process of development and implementation of an electrolysis plant for the production of low-concentration sodium hypochlorite by direct electrolysis of Mediterranean Sea water for biocidal treatment of the cooling circuit of the El Dabaa NPS in Egypt. The key stages of the project are considered: from research studies and design to industrial production. The conducted studies demonstrated the practical applicability of the technology for the purification of the circulating water at the nuclear power station. Retrofitting the plant will provide for an environmentally safe and cost-effective biocidal treatment system that meets the current requirements of the nuclear power engineering. The implementation of the project provides for improving the operational reliability of the power units of the El Dabaa NPS in compliance all the environmental safety standards. The parameters of sodium hypochlorite production, technical solutions focused on increasing the efficiency and reliability of the equipment are given. The paper is of practical interest to water specialists in the field of nuclear power engineering, chemical technologies and design of power equipment.

Study of water softening and desalination by nanofiltration at the Taganrog water treatment facilities

Summary

The results of studies on reducing the hardness and salt concentration in water using the nanofiltration method are presented. The tests were carried out under production and laboratory conditions at the water treatment facilities of Taganrog. The results of testing and specifying the process parameters of nanofiltration are given. The data on the change in the cation-anion composition of permeate and concentrate depending on the number of nanofiltration cascades and pretreatment of the raw water with an antiscalant is provided. The results of field tests of softening and partial desalination of water under the conditions of water purification process at the Taganrog water treatment facilities confirmed the high efficiency of single-stage four-cascade nanofiltration.

Designing process solutions for the upgrade of the water treatment facilities of Anapa town resort

Summary

Project process solutions for the upgrade of the water treatment facilities supplying water to Anapa town resort including the methods of water treatment with activated carbon, preammoniation, and stabilization are presented. The proposed new process flow scheme takes into account the current requirements to reducing the anthropogenic impact on the environment and provides for a number of methods of wash water treatment and reuse, water sludge thickening and dewatering. The process flow scheme provides for the possibility of decommissioning part of the process units and auxiliary equipment during periods of seasonal reduction in water consumption, without any violation of the process parameters of the treatment facilities. The results obtained can be used to select and justify the technology for drinking water purification with the lower reaches of the Kuban River being the water source.

The results of studying the reuse of sedimented coagulant in the processes of chemical water dephosphotation

Summary

The results of a research study of possible reusing sedimented aluminium-based coagulant in the processes of chemical wastewater dephosphotation are presented. The experimental findings on determining the actual dosage of coagulant – polyoxychloride of aluminum – for chemical phosphorus removal. Empirical data are presented confirming the high repeated effect of dephosphotation while using previously sedimented coagulant. Possible reusing the coagulant in order to increase the efficiency and reduce the costs of wastewater treatment in general is experimentally confirmed.

Effect of anode coating material on the electrolytic oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in gas cleaning systems

Summary

Possible removal of malodorous substances from ventilation systems at the wastewater disposal facilities by adsorption is shown, where water containing an oxidizer – sodium hypochlorite – is used as an absorbent. For further development of this method, the results of experimental studies of the effect of the anodic coating composition on the specific energy consumption for the production of electrolytic sodium hypochlorite are presented. The results of experimental studies of the effect of the anode coating composition during the oxidizer reduction in the process of removing hydrogen sulfide from gas-air emissions in a counter-current absorber with circulation of the absorption solution showed that the nature of the anode coating significantly affected the concentration of sodium hypochlorite generated during the electrolysis of the chloride-containing solution, and also on the energy characteristics of gas cleaning.

Training of skilled professionals for the water industry: Yu. V. Voronov – scientist, teacher, dean of the Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal faculty of Moscow State University of Civil Engineering

Summary

The paper dwells upon the history of training professionals in the field of water supply and wastewater disposal at the Faculty of Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal of the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering. For over 30 years, the faculty was headed by Yu. V. Voronov, Professor, Doctor of Engineering, who brought up more than one generation of talented young people who later became highly skilled professionals in the water industry. Information is provided on the scientific research conducted by the employees of the Department of Wastewater Disposal of MGSU. Among them, especially notable and significant for science are the developments of S. V. Yakovlev, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor, Doctor of Engineering. The personality of  Yu. V. Voronov is shown as a talented scientist and teacher, who is a worthy example for future generations of professionals in the field of water supply and wastewater disposal.
