Controversial issues of improving the regulatory framework governing the design, construction and operation of gravity wastewater disposal systems

Summary

In recent decades, the integrity health of sewer pipelines has been deteriorating in the cities of the Russian Federation. The increasing rate of wear and tear and unsatisfactory integrity health of a considerable number of sewers, the need to ensure the reliability and environmental safety of the pipelines, and limited material resources for their rehabilitation and renewal in the context of housing and utilities reform require a scientifically proved approach to solve these problems. Choosing the technologies of pipeline rehabilitation in order to improve their reliability requires improving the regulatory documents (in particular, CP 32.13330.2018 «Sewerage. External networks and structures») that regulate the requirements for newly built and reconstructed wastewater disposal systems. The federal legislation establishes the minimum threshold requirements for buildings and structures (including the networks and engineering infrastructures in them), as well as for the design, construction, operation and utilization. CP 32.13330.2018, that specifies the requirements for wastewater disposal systems of populated areas newly built or under reconstruction; for the external networks and permanent structures for domestic, surface (rain and melt) and industrial wastewater compositionally alike, considers the requirements of the federal legislation not to the fullest extent. Based on the analysis of the relevant federal laws and provisions of CP 32.13330.2018, the need to establish basic requirements for sewer pipelines is substantiated, i. e. pressurization, steady-state stability, estimated transported wastewater flow pass and maintainability.

Method and algorithm for estimating the life cycle cost of water supply and sewer pipelines

Summary

The issues of updating standard technical documents – codes of practice, state standards, instructional guidelines, as well as directions for their improvement to increase the efficiency of designing, building and operating public water supply and wastewater disposal systems in the cities and towns of Russia are considered. It is shown that recently the Russian construction sector has focused on updating and actualizing the regulatory framework in the field of design and construction in terms of reducing mandatory requirements in codes of practice. The main provisions and algorithm of the Method for estimating the life cycle cost of water supply and sewer pipelines are given. It is noted that there are a number of guidelines and standards explaining the procedure of estimating a life cycle. However, no method exists, so far, agreed upon either at the domestic or international level that could provide a reliable basis for comparing products and offers from different manufacturers. The estimation of the life cycle cost of water supply and sewer pipelines involves an economic analysis of the total cost of construction, installation, operation and disposal of pipelines made of various construction materials.

From grey cast iron to ductile iron: the evolution of the most sought-after material for water supply networks

Summary

For centuries cast iron has been a key material for water supply systems owing to its strength and long service life. In 1932, ductile iron was produced: modifying gray cast iron with magnesium transformed the lamellar graphite of gray cast iron into spheroidal graphite, significantly improving the mechanical properties of the material. Today, the story continues: in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities throughout Russia, utility networks are being upgraded by replacing gray cast iron pipes with ductile iron pipes.

Engineering solutions for the upgrade of standard filtration plants of the domestic water supply systems

Summary

The main reason why the quality of treated water fails to meet the sanitary and hygienic requirements in many domestic and drinking water supply systems is the obsolete water treatment technology used at filtration plans built as per standard design last century. Based on the experience of research, design and construction of water treatment facilities, the experts of ECO-PROJECT R & D Company, LLC, have performed a technological analysis of the design and parameters of the water treatment equipment at these facilities, identified factors that negatively affect the results of water treatment, provided technical solutions for the upgrade of water mixers with chemicals, flocculation chambers and sedimentation tanks.

Applying ZuluGIS and ISIGR software in hydraulic calculations
of outdoor water supply systems

Summary

A comparative analysis of specialised ZuluGIS and ISIGR software packages designed for the hydraulic simulation of outdoor water supply systems is presented. The research is focused on estimating the calculation accuracy, rate of computing, and user-friendliness of the software. The methods for calculating λ, hydraulic resistance coefficient, accounting local losses, the possibilities of setting parameters and performing calculations for the representative water supply modes: the maximum, average and minimum hourly flow rates per day, maximum, average and minimum water consumption, as well as maximum hourly water consumption for fire extinguishing purposes were estimated. The results showed that ZuluGIS provided for the fast data processing and integration with the geographic information systems; however, it has limitations in model dimensions in the free version. ISIGR provides the user with possible choosing different calculation formulas to determine the hydraulic resistance coefficient; however, the it depends on the Internet connection and server infrastructure. The findings indicate that ZuluGIS is preferable for designing and analyzing complex networks, whereas ISIGR will be better for operational calculations and educational purposes. The results obtained will be helpful while choosing software for hydraulic simulation.

Estimating the efficiency of wastewater sludge dewatering
using new generation equipment

Summary

An overview of new generation equipment based on the operational experience in dewatering a mixture of excess activated sludge and raw wastewater sludge is presented. A detailed description of the technical characteristics of the equipment with placing the emphasis on such important features as enhanced reliability, improved resistance to various types of sludge, minimal energy consumption, and reduced maintenance costs is provided. The comparative operational and technical characteristics of advanced wastewater sludge dewatering equipment are presented. The economic feasibility of introducing a new generation screw dehydrator in comparison with other dewatering methods is analyzed. The information is addressed to the professionals making decisions on purchasing dewatering equipment, which allows them to weigh the risks and estimate the costs.

Design capacity of rainfall runoff in a treatment scheme with sedimentation in an accumulation tank

Summary

An iterative calculation of volume-flow rate parameters of the treatment facilities for the 1st type surface runoff for the operating mode with runoff sedimentation in an accumulation tank is presented. The calculation is made using current long-term climatic data on the actual series of rains and average duration of periods between runoff-producing precipitation for a given area. It is shown that the capacity of the treatment facilities determined by the routine calculation does not provide for meeting the regulatory requirement for the treatment of the 70% average annual (average seasonal) amount of the runoff. The most economical option is storage type treatment facilities without runoff sedimentation in the accumulation tank. In this case, the regulatory requirement for the treatment of 70% average annual (average seasonal) amount of the runoff is achieved provided the capacity of the treatment facilities 4.3 times lower than in the scheme with sedimentation in the accumulation tank.
