Hamburg – St. Petersburg: cooperation in water sector
Summary
The information on the cooperation between municipal water utilities – Hamburg Wasser and State Unitary Enterprise «Vodokanal of St. Petersburg» is presented. St. Petersburg is an economic, research and cultural centre, major transport hub and big sea port of the North-Western region of Russia. The city produces a substantial impact on the environment and water quality of the Baltic Sea. Hamburg is the second big German city and one of the biggest European ports. Hamburg and St. Petersburg since long have been bound by trading relations that provided for establishing the first German-Russian commonwealth of twinned cities. At present this background forms the framework for the cooperation of Hamburg Wasser and Vodokanal of St. Petersburg, the companies that provide for drinking water supply, wastewater disposal and wastewater sludge utilization. In this respect mutual exchange of experience in the field of operation upgrade and optimization, improvement of operation and power efficiency of the public water supply and wastewater networks and facilities as well as in the field of improving the existing regulatory framework is of high value. The requirements to the protection of the water bodies are extremely high for both companies, therefore both in Hamburg and St. Petersburg large-scale wastewater collection systems are under construction. All the Hamburg Wasser water and wastewater treatment facilities are fully independent of external power supply. At present in Vodokanal of St. Petersburg energy optimization of the pumping stations and upgrade of the wastewater treatment facilities operation are carried out.

Heat potential of wastewater effluents for use in heating systems
Summary
Energy conservation issues remain the most pressing in the Russian Federation. In a harsh climate, heat energy costs are among the highest costs in the housing and utilities infrastructure. Improving the efficiency of heating systems and using nonconventional and alternative heat sources are priority areas in the upgrade of the existing facilities and construction of new ones. An analysis of literature data on technical solutions for the utilization of wastewater effluent heat for heat supply needs was conducted. The aspects of using heat pumps to convert low-potential heat are considered. The gross, technical and economic potentials of using in heat pumps the heat of the effluents transported from the treatment facilities of the public wastewater disposal systems in the Republic of Bashkortostan to the tributaries of the Volga River are analyzed. The effect of introducing alternative heating systems on the environmental indicators is shown. Using wastewater effluent heat will improve the environmental parameters of the heating systems, reduce CO2 emissions and improve the environmental air condition in the Republic of Bashkortostan.

Deep-well pumping units at the Velizhany water treatment facilities of Tumen
Summary
Centrifugal submersible pumps are designed for installation in deep wells, open pits and different reservoirs. The pumps ensure high pressure of the pumped clean water with a small sand concentration. Deep-well pumps are widely used both for domestic and industrial purposes (e. g. for automatic water supply, garden irrigation, in firefighting systems etc.). Deep-well pumping units have been used at the Tumen Vodokanal facilities from the beginning of 1980-ies in response to the need of deep underground water abstraction. The story of establishing the production of APVM and ETSV deep-well pumping units at the premises of the mechanical repair department of «Tumen Vodokanal» LLC is described. The problems related to their production and operation are designated. The succeeding introduction of advanced energy efficient equipment manufactured by Wilo German company and SAER Italian company is considered, the results of their operation are presented. Replacing ETSV pumping units with Wilo and SAER energy efficient pumps provided for reducing the energy intensity at the water intake facilities of the Velizhany water treatment plant by 23.8%. The results of pilot operation of Ciris CRS10-65/3 deep-well pumping unit manufactured by Livnynasos OJSC at one of the Tumen water intakes are summarized. The operation of deep-well pumping units made of high quality anticorrosive materials allowed three-fold reduction of repairs and hence significantly decrease of the operation and maintenance expenditures at the intake pumping station of the Velizhany water treatment facilities.

Control of centrifugal pump parallel operation
Summary
The problems related to the cable capacity of pumping units during their parallel operation (one with variable-frequency control, another one – without variable-frequency control) are considered. In the traditional control schemes (without variable-frequency control) the problem is solved by throttling of each pump with cable capacity levelling of their drive motors. This function is usually carried out by the operator in manual mode. Based on the conducted analysis an algorithm of pump control was developed that provided for their safe operation in the working area and maximum energy efficiency. It is proposed to carry out controlled throttling of the pump without variable-frequency control by controlling the position of the set point of the pump with variable-frequency control at the working area interface. To ensure failure-free operation of the pumping station in case of the pump with variable-frequency control emergency shutdown it is recommended to change the system of the pump without variable-frequency control for automated pressure maintaining with the help of throttling. To implement the given algorithm the use of a special process controller with the sufficient computing power (STK 500 type) and series SP 200 blocks is proposed.

Utilization of Biogas and Creation of Autonomous Sources of Power Supply at Treatment Facilities
Summary
The process of methane fermentation of sludge generated in the course of wastewater treatment is used at sewerage treatment facilities of the MSUE Mosvodokanal. The complex reconstruction of heated digestion tanks is carried out since1998; as a result of it the output of biogas has been increased by 1,7 times – up to 250 000 m3/day. To rise the efficiency of using the biogas and reliability of power supply it was decided to construct two mini-heat electric power stations of 10 MWt capacity each. An investor, the Austrian concern EVN, has been selected on the competition base. The mini-heat electric power station at the Kuryanovo treatment facilities was put into operation in January 2009. This mini-HEPS ensures 50% of need in electric energy and 30% in heat energy. This project became one of the largest in the field of alternative power engineering and the first power station in Russia operating on biogas.

Energy conservation in applying protection coatings by trenchless technologies
Summary
The analysis of trenchless technologies and different types of inner protection pipe coatings for ensuring the energy conservation effect during water transportation is presented. Circular pipes and pipes with deformed shape profile, fusion-bonded linings based on inorganic and organic materials are considered as protective coatings. Possible achievement of energy conservation in applying protective coatings by trenchless technologies of renovating water pressure pipelines on the basis of running meter of the pipeline length per year was studied. On the basis of the designed computer-aided program a comprehensive evaluation of energy efficient Swagelining technology that involved pulling new preliminary thermomechanically contracted polymer pipes through the old pipeline was carried out. The computer-aided program for calculating the operation parameters of a pressure pipeline subject to rehabilitation with preliminary contracted polymer pipes allows the designers of making efficient and prompt decisions by event simulation and the use of a wide range of polymer pipes of the relative diameter and SDR value (ratio of the diameter to the pipe wall thickness).
