High performance design of trash screens for wastewater treatment

Summary

The reliable operation of the treatment facilities of the municipal wastewater disposal system depends significantly on the efficiency and robustness of the trash screens installed in the head of the process flow at the treatment facilities. In addition trash screens not only protect the equipment from blockages but also prevent suspended solids from polluting natural water bodies receiving effluents. In order to improve the efficiency of trash capture the use of RS screen is recommended. It is highly resistant to mechanical damage caused by large-size impurities in wastewater which results in the reduction of the failure rate and the amount of repair works. The screen design includes a device for additional rake cleaning during the reverse movement to completely eliminate any risk of the rakes being wrapped with filamentary inclusions during the operation. An original mechanism of driving chain tensioning provides for eliminating rake jerking and skewing. The design ensures screen self-sealing in the process of installation into the channel to eliminate unscreened water breakthrough between the frame and channel walls. For the period of RS screens operation the following results were noted: full absence of filter cloth clogging; 3–4 fold screen output increase compared to the previously operated models; reduction of bottom sediments in the channel before the screens; high reliability in case of peak discharge of filamentary inclusions; reduction of energy consumption.

Mechanical treatment of wastewater

Summary

The selection of equipment for mechanical wastewater treatment is an important stage in the reconstruction or new construction of the treatment facilities that determines their efficiency and reliability in terms of the technology and operation. The examples of the currently widespread technical solutions for designing filtering cloth of the screens for mechanical wastewater treatment are given. The effectiveness of these solutions is compared. On the basis of studying wastewater treatment facilities in Germany, a comparison of the debris retention efficiency depending on the applied filtration grade, i. e., two-dimensional (perforation) and one-dimensional (bar spacing) is presented.

Principal directions for improving process flow schemes and designs of units for surface runoff treatment

Summary

The issues of surface runoff treatment from the territories of communities of various functional purposes are considered, in particular, the improvement of process flow schemes and designs of low-capacity local treatment facilities of flow-through or storage type, that discharge the effluents into the public wastewater disposal systems and water bodies. The features of the organization of systems for the surface runoff disposal and treatment, as well as the provisions of the water and environmental legislation of the Russian Federation and design code that have come into force over the past 2 years are given. It is noted that in the context of the transition of the federal regulation of wastewater discharge to technological regulation based on the best available technologies, the scope of small-capacity facilities of flow-through and storage type tends to expand. This is due to the fact that the customers are allowed to use them while discharging surface runoff into the public wastewater disposal systems of the communities, provided the quality of effluents received by these systems comply with the regulatory requirements. Principal schemes of the flow-through and storage type facilities for surface runoff treatment in combination with tertiary treatment plants are given. Casings of underground tanks and vessels, including improved flow-through units for the primary mechanical treatment of surface runoff, are made of fiberglass pipes of increased ring stiffness and durability.

Commissioning – the key stage of putting treatment facilities into operation

Summary

The issues related to the commissioning of the equipment and wastewater treatment facilities are considered. A brief review of the history of commissioning the facilities in the Soviet Union and in present day Russia is given. The problem areas of adjusting every equipment assembly, the algorithm of work performance and the required results are shown. The attainment of sustainable performance is provided by quality and skilled commissioning. Correct visual evaluation of the equipment state carried out during the acceptance for commissioning procedure is very important. Nonobserved defects and faults in the process line will cause fast assembly fail which can result in an accident. The principles of «My Project» Company activities related to commissioning are presented. Special attention is paid to adjusting biological treatment in aeration tanks: from the front end engineering to the routine maintenance of the assembly.

Up-To-Date Equipment and Facilities for Mechanical Treatment of Wastewater from Coarse-Disperse Admixtures

Summary

Up-to-date equipment for wastewater treatment from coarse-disperse admixtures is considered. Designs of screens are described briefly, their advantages and shortcomings are presented. Formulas for calculation of head loss on sreens are presented. Recommendations to install screens with openings not less than 5 mm are made. The comparative analysis of different methods of sand-catchers design shows that the normative time of stay in sand catchers can be extended up to 10 minutes. Literary data treatment has made it possible to obtain formulas offered as a new calculation base for determination of efficiency of horizontal and aerated sand catchers during the designing. Up-to-date equipment for sand collection and removal is considered.

Stages of launching a biological treatment plant at the wastewater treatment facilities with dosing easily oxidable organic matter

Summary

Issues related to commissioning a biological treatment plant at the facilities for household and similar in composition wastewater treatment during the trial start of the treatment facilities are considered. The stages of commissioning a biological treatment plant at the wastewater treatment facilities with «inoculating» activated sludge from the operating biological treatment facilities and with dosing easily oxidable organic matter are considered in detail. The equipment configuration of the WWTP-9 produced by Germes Group is described. All stages of the biological treatment plant commissioning are considered through the example of the start-up of WWTP-9 with the use of numerous experimental data. The periods of biological treatment plant commissioning stages have been determined. The problems of adjusting the biological treatment plant and the ways of their elimination to achieve the required result are presented. The technology used at the WWT facilities provides for the effluent quality that meets the requirements for the discharge into a water body of commercial fishing importance.
