Intensification of low-turbidity colored water treatment in a sludge blanket clarifier (part 1)

Summary

The specific features of high colored low turbidity water treatment in clarifiers with sludge blanket during representative time periods with low temperatures and water alkalinity are considered by the example of the Vologda water treatment facilities. The results of investigating chemical pretreatment of water from the Vologa River and Koubenskoye Lake during flood periods with the use of various oxychloride and aluminium sulfate trademarks as well as cationic and anionic flocculants are presented. The advanced methods of enforcing water treatment process in a sludge blanket are covered. The results of studying a «clarifier-filter with floating media» combined system are presented.

Intensification of low-turbidity color water treatment in a sludge blanket clarifier (part 2)

Summary

The specific features of high color low turbidity water treatment in clarifiers with a sludge blanket during representative time periods with low temperatures and water alkalinity are considered by the example of the Vologda water treatment facilities. The advanced methods of water treatment process enhancement in a sludge blanket are covered. The results of studying a «clarifier-filter with floating media» combined system are presented. The implementation of the proposed measures at the existing water treatment facilities of the Northwest regions, Siberia and Far East will provide for the efficient operation of the clarifiers.

Studies and experience of introducing innovative technologies of ground water conditioning

Summary

Ground water is often characterized by the presence of dissolved gases, iron and manganese compounds, fluorine in certain cases, nutrients, organics of natural and anthropogenic origin etc. Therefore, at the initial stage of ground water purification preliminary removal of dissolved gases and saturation of water with oxygen from air is required to provide for oxidizing protoxidic forms of the ingredients subject to removal. Testing ground water conditioning technologies was carried out under the conditions of the operating water treatment plant at the pilot facilities. The technologies involve the use of bioreactors with jet vacuum ejection at the initial stage and subsequent water filtration in filters with floating media. The role and advantages of bioreactors and technologies involving their use are shown in comparison with other aeration facilities and devices. Based on the research findings the process parameters of the main facilities operation have been specified that ensure the sustainable regulatory water treatment level. It was stated that after «charging» the bioreactor and filter media alongside with aeration and dissolved gas removal the efficiency of deironing at the first stage was 78.6–88.9%; at the second stage – up to до 97% at 25 and 8 m/h filtration rate, relatively. The results of experimental studies and commercial tests at the operating water intake are presented. The experience of operating commercial plants is generalized that confirms the efficiency of the developed energy-efficient technologies of ground water conditioning.

Project for the reconstruction of the tertiary treatment plant
at the wastewater treatment facilities of the city of Samara

Summary

Design solutions implemented by «Samarskie Kommunal’nye Sistemy» LLC on the reconstruction of the tertiary treatment plant of the Samara wastewater treatment facilities were considered and analyzed. The project provides for the chemical removal of phosphorus in addition to biological dephosphotation and filtration of effluents after biological treatment. The chemical phosphorus removal unit has been constructed as a building with a packaged plant inside for the preparation and dosing of aluminum sulfate solution; this layout provides for reducing the heating and ventilation costs of the chemical treatment facilities. The chemical agent is added at twelve points in the sludge mixture flow at the outlet of each aeration tank. The calculated concentration of phosphorus as phosphate in the effluent is 0.2 mg/l; the annual consumption of marketable coagulant is 1545 tons; the purchase unit cost is 0.15 rubles/m3. Tertiary treatment by filtration has been ensured by the reconstruction of eight circular settling tanks with a diameter of 54 m into settler-filters with floating media. Herewith, no construction of new buildings and utilities is required. The calculated concentration of suspended solids in the effluent is 4 mg/l, BODfull – 3 mg l. The specific energy consumption for the operation of filters with floating media is
0.57 Wh/m3, the cost of electricity – 0.0022 rubles/m3.
