Natural specifics of underground water deposits of the intermorainic complex of the Kurortnyi district of Saint-Petersburg
Summary
The problems of estimating the resources of underground water under complicated hydrogeological conditions of the intermorainic water-bearing complex in the Kurortnyi district of Saint-Petersburg are brought up. The complexity of the deposit conditions lie in the irregularity of the lithological composition and capacity of the water-bearing material in relation to the depth and strike as well as in the determination of factors of formation and replenishment of the underground water deposits in the process of their exploitation. Such deposits, as a rule, are associated with the areas of ancient buried valleys and contain significant stocks of fresh underground water available for drinking purposes. In the Kurortnyi district «Molodezhnoe», «Zelenogorskoe», «Solnechnoe» deposits are located within the boundaries of the cognominal communities. The underground water resources amount to about 15–30 thousand m3/day, deep well flow rate – 2–5 thousand m3/day. Under the conditions of the complicated natural specifics of the deposits estimating the underground water resources by traditional methods of hydrodynamic calculations gives highly distorted results. The best-attested results are obtained during the development of a computational geofiltration model. The option of calculating underground water resources by the mathematical model method is considered. The principle stages of designing a computational geofiltration model through the example of «Molodezhnoe» deposit are given.

Internal audit of management systems as a tool of the management process improvement
Summary
Case study of the experience of SUE «Vodokanal of St. Petersburg» demonstrates the importance of carrying out internal audits of the environment management and quality management systems for the improvement of the management process. The advantages that the enterprises are gaining upon having introduced and certified the management systems are presented. The process of internal audit is proposed and described in details. It is shown how the internal audit provides for the add-on value in the enterprise activities. The add-on value of the audit is considered as an aggregate of three components: administrative component (supplying top managers with the information on the capability to reach the set objectives), production component (identification of problems elimination of which can improve the efficiency of the enterprise and, consequently, improve the satisfaction of all the stakeholders), and economic component (resource optimization). Internal audit of the management systems is a tool for determining and analyzing «bottlenecks» in organizational processes, in the development of timely correcting measures for the improvement of the enterprise activities. The priorities in audit execution are shown. Examples of using the audit results in the improvement of the management processes are set.

SUE «Vodokanal of St. Petersburg»: measures on import substitution in-progress
Summary
Measures that SUE «Vodokanal of St. Petersburg» is implementing to promote domestic production of goods for water and wastewater utilities are presented. The import substitution policy maintained at the enterprise already delivers positive results. The share of imported products in total purchases in 2017 was reduced from 30% in 2014 to 1.5%. Beginning from 2015 Vodokanal of St. Petersburg has been in close contact with the Russian enterprises-manufacturers of products for water and wastewater utilities. Joint activities on promoting Russian products are carried out on the principles of transparent information exchange and co-resolution of arising problems. At present the problem of import substitution of tubular products has been practically solved. There are domestic manufacturers of shutoff and control valves and pumping equipment, and foreign brands that have established local manufacturing in Russia. In the process of reconstruction domestic water meters, pressure gauges and pumping equipment are used. Besides, in the Southern water supply zone «NEMO-AQUA» domestic software has been introduced. In order to overcome the technological inferiority of the Russian industry establishing domestic production of goods with improved characteristics compared to available similar products is required. This approach will provide for increasing the share of applied innovative technologies, products and materials.

Activated carbon based on anthracite with high volumetric microporosity for water treatment
Summary
A new approach to the assessment of microporous structure and adsorption properties of activated carbon per unit volume has been substantiated. A few stage GAC technology for activated carbon production on the basis of anthracite has been developed. The qualitative characteristics of activated carbons made of anthracite from various regions of Russia have been studied and the affinity of their adsorption properties and strength characteristics is shown. The studies of adsorption properties of GAC (ground anthracite sorbent) activated carbon in drinking water treatment under static and dynamic conditions were carried out. The efficiency of activated carbon made of anthracite in removing heavy metal ions from wastewater from gold beneficiation plants is demonstrated. High adsorption capacity of GAC activated carbon both in relation to organic and inorganic pollutants in industrial water and wastewater treatment provides for its high efficiency in water supply and wastewater disposal systems. The study results showed that replacing sand or hydroanthracite media with active anthracite (eliminating the construction of a separate block with activated carbon) at the existing municipal water treatment facilities will provide for saving 150 billion rubles because the packed density of active anthracite is comparable to the packed density of quartz sand. Anthracite is not washed during filtration facilities backwash; with that both filtration of mechanical pollutants and sorption of molecular toxicants take place. As a result high quality drinking water is obtained without substantial expenditures.

Optimization of the structure and parameters of the developing group water supply systems
Summary
Group water supply systems many of which are high-power and capital-intensive facilities have been widely practiced on the arid territories of Russia. In designing and developing these facilities substantiation of their structure and parameters has been the most important task. Based on flow-oriented models and optimization methods a method is proposed that provides for the solution of the following problems both as a whole and separately: optimization of the location and capacity of underground and surface water intake facilities; optimization of the location, capacity and composition of water treatment facilities; selection of the route of group pipelines and their optimal diameters; optimal distribution of the construction of new and upgrade of the existing network sections under the conditions of limited investments. The methodology of the optimal design is based on the comparison of cost, technical, reliability, ecological characteristics of the analyzed construction and operation options of group water supply systems. The main process parameters of the designed water supply systems are determined by their cost in the optimization criterion on the basis of which the best option for the future construction and operation of group water supply systems is chosen. Reliability, controllability, and aseismic strength are taken into account in terms of definite limitations of both technical parameters and investments into the construction and operation of group water supply systems. Based on the proposed method and designed program the substantiation of the structure and parameters of group water supply systems in the Irkutsk Region was developed.

Problems in operating return water cycles and new approaches to their solution
Summary
The main problems arising in operating water return cycles in process systems with the use of fan-cooling towers are described. These are biological fouling and slime deposits on the heat exchangers, water distributors and cooling tower fillers. The comparative data on the standard requirements to return water and actual data at the industrial enterprises is presented. It is noted that the actual quality of return water does not meet the requirements to the concentration of suspended solids, iron oxides and organic pollutants (permanganate oxidizability, BOD, total microbial count) explaining the difficulties in chemical treatment of return water. A new approach to the calculation of return water pollution with suspended solids in makeup water and air dust for different climatic conditions (flood, winter, drought) at different stripping coefficients is presented. On the basis of the calculations it is concluded that during return water chemical treatment the stripping coefficient shall be preferably maintained less than 2. In order to raise it the removal of suspended solids, iron oxides and organic pollutants from makeup water and part of return water is required. For this purpose by way of example «DYCLAR» technology of dynamic water clarification is presented.

Practical aspects of operating surface runoff treatment facilities in winter period
Summary
The core indicators of the operation of surface runoff treatment facilities in winter period are cited. The results of snow melt composition study obtained from the samples of fresh snow and samples taken from road surfaces in Moscow and different industrial areas are presented. The analysis was carried out at the MosvodokanalNIIproject laboratory for municipal, industrial-rain water and sludge treatment. Based on the chemical and analytical studies the multicomponent chemical composition of snow mass was determined that reflected the large-scale impact of anthropogenic and natural factors. The kinetics of the suspended substances in snow melt sedimentation in a snow melter section of the retention tank of the treatment facilities is shown. The process of snow mass melting under the conditions of the operating facilities was studied. Field measurements of thermophysical properties were carried out, the recommendations on reducing the costs of the energy inputs of the snow melting process and the time of snow mass processing were developed. It was stated that the efficient operation of the retention facilities for industrial surface runoff treatment designed by «MosvodokanalN Iproject» JSC could be maintained throughout the year and served as an example of a water conservation solution.
