Introduction of energy saving measures in Krasnodar Vodokanal
Summary
The aspects of efficient energy consumption by water and wastewater utilities are of primary importance. In order to reduce the energy consumption constituent of the production costs certain energy saving measures are introduced aiming to the development and improvement of the process technologies, upgrade of equipment and controls. This approach is provided by the development of market relations, deficiency of energy resources and, consequently, by the energy price increase. The energy consumption pattern of an enterprise is determined by the type of products manufactured or services rendered. The principle procedure of an energy audit of the pumping stations operated by Kransnodar Vodokanal; the basic technical solutions on the water supply upgrade are presented alongside with the comparison of the calculated and actual cost savings resulted from the introduction of the energy saving measures.

Integrated Approach to Optimization of Operation of the Water Supply and Distribution System of the City of Omsk
Summary
An integrated approach to the optimization of operation of the water supply and distribution system of large cities based on hydraulic modelling with the use of modern software products is proposed. A possibility of adaptation to actual conditions of calculated results obtained by electronic simulation of water supply networks is shown on the example of Omsk. The solution of this problem makes it possible to model the necessary changes in the composition and mode of operation of each of the elements of a water supply network. The result of such an approach is reduction in the accident rate at networks and energy savings at pumping stations. Methods of execution of works, means of the measurement used, sequence of measures to be taken, the results obtained and possible prospects are presented.

Method of estimating the efficiency of pumping unit frequency regulation (to be discussed)
Summary
The method of estimating energy saving from using frequency regulation of the pumping unit capacity in water supply systems is presented. The estimation of the capacity efficiency of pumping units is carried out only from the energy saving resulting from the use of frequency regulation instead of throttling (other saving components are not considered). To estimate energy saving it is required to compare the power consumed from the grid in the existing scheme of the regulation by penstock gate throttling and in the frequency regulation scheme. Then the energy saving in monetary form shall be compared with the expenses for retrofitting the frequency regulation system. The method is based on the graphical analysis of the pump operation point parameters in the operating group and optimized for the use in water supply systems operating by the pressure.

Method of evaluating the effectiveness of frequency regulation of the performance of sewage pumping units
Summary
The method of evaluating energy savings through the use of frequency regulation of the pumping unit performance at sewage pumping stations is considered. The method is based on a graphical analysis of the parameters of the operation point of the pumps in the working group and is developed for the use in sewer networks that operate according to the level in the receiving tank. The proposed method of evaluating the effectiveness of frequency regulation at sewage pumping stations has been proved by many years of experience of using and is precisely evaluative. Energy savings at sewage pumping stations are significantly lower than at water pumping stations. This applies to the systems with start/stop control because the effect of frequency regulation consists in reducing the velocity of fluid in the pressure pipeline. The bigger the dynamic component of the network characteristic in relation to its static component (in the range of the station capacity change), the stronger effect is manifested. In practice, this is extremely rare. The energy savings in the above examples with the start/stop mode does not exceed 10% (excluding the losses in the frequency converter).

Optimization of the power consumption at the air blower house of «Rostov Wastewater Treatment Plant» Production Facility
Summary
The air blower house is the main electric consumer at the wastewater treatment facilities. Possible ways of energy saving at the Rostov Wastewater Treatment Plant are considered. With this purpose the measures aimed at the optimization of the operation of TSNV 800/1,6 centrifugal air pump were taken. As part of the studies the operation of the air blower house in winter period was investigated together with the possible power efficient mode of TSNV 800/1,6 centrifugal air pump operation using the method of gate valve throttling at the suction pipe. The tests showed that 60° opening the throttling vale provided for the most efficient operation of the blower. During the tests the stable and efficient operation of TSNV 800/1,6 blower at 90 to 60° reduction of the opening angle of the throttling valve with the reduction of the power consumption. Basing on the results of the studies the schedules determining the method of operation of the blowers at the wastewater treatment plant were developed.

Optimization of the mode of sludge removal from secondary settling tanks
Summary
In the process of upgrading the Moscow Novokur’ianovskie wastewater treatment facilities the scraper mechanism for activated sludge collection in 54 m diameter secondary settling tanks was replaced by SO-54 sludge sucker. Since it was the first experience of using sludge suckers at the Kur’ianovskie wastewater treatment facilities it was decided to carry out experimental tests of the operation of the secondary settling tanks equipped with sludge suckers as well as to develop and approbate the method of efficient activated sludge collection and removal from the bottom of the settling tanks. The operation of SO-54 sludge sucker in different modes was analyzed. It was shown that the design of the settling tank provided for the operation control by switching off and on the suction pipes of the upper level of the sludge suckers, i. e. eliminating the use of complicated instruments. Regulating the operation of the suction pipes of the upper level of the sludge suckers with a time switch provides for maintaining the optimal height of the activated sludge layer. Switching off the suction pipes of the upper level of the sludge suckers results in the increased concentration of recycle sludge. As a result of changing SO-54 sludge pump operation the dosage of recycle sludge was increased from 4.6 to 7.1 g/l eliminating the effluent quality in relation to suspended solids. This allowed reducing the recycle sludge volume subject to pumping to the aeration tanks, and reducing the number of operating pumps, and power saving.

The experience of introducing variable-frequency electric drives of pumping units
Summary
Regulating the rotation speed of pumping unit rotors at the pumping stations of the second and third lift of the Samara pumping-filtration station has been suggested, tried and tested. The introduction of frequency regulation mode of the pumping units operation with the use of variable-frequency electric drives provided for 29.52% reduction of the failure rate of the water mains and distribution networks compared to 2013 and 25.58% reduction compared to 2014; 23% reduction of the power consumption by the pumping units of the second lift pumping station; 15.4% reduction by the pumping units of the third lift pumping station supplying water to the customers. At that the reliability of the water supply system in whole improves owing to the reduction of the network failure rate alongside with the quality of services provided by «Samarskie Kommunal’nye Sistemy» LLC.

Industrial-scale tests of an injection aeration system at the Velizhan water deironing plant in Tyumen
Summary
Tsurumi submersible jet injectors were suggested for the installation in the channels of the rapid filters of the first process line at the Velizhan water deironing plant operated by Tyumen Vodokanal JSC; for the second process line it was recommended to dismantle the polyethylene pipe aeration system in the deaerator-degasifier and to replace the air blower with advanced economically efficient submersible impeller aerators. The engineering solutions were proved by the industrial-scale tests carried out on-site. The results of the water quality analyses before and after retrofitting the advanced aeration system are presented. The approximate evaluation of the power efficiency and cost saving when using submersible impeller and jet aerators is given.

Technical and economic aspects of using variable-speed drive in pump units
Summary
The introduction of variable-speed drives is considered as an integral part of the program of reducing pump unit power consumption. Power conservation can be provided both by eliminating pressure excess and by increasing average pump efficiency that can be achieved primarily by pump selection depending on the water and wastewater network operation mode. Pump efficiency depends significantly on the number of operating pumps with variable-speed drives as well as on the algorithms of their interaction with non-controlled pumps. The examples of calculating energy saving and investments for two pump units are presented. The decision on the volume of investments in variable-speed drive retrofit and pump unit upgrade shall be taken on the basis of a business project.
