Analysis of maintenance geotechnologies and monitoring of sewer tunnels in complicated geotechnical engineering conditions
Summary
A comprehensive approach to the selection of geotechnologies for the reconstruction of long sections of sewer tunnels in complicated ground conditions, under technogenic impact and continuous transportation of effluents is described. Based on the analysis of operating long-running sewer tunnels, as well as the results of an instrumental examination of their technical condition, the main factors of technogenic and natural origin that reduce their design safety and sustainable operation of the most loaded sections of the system of sewer tunnels are described. The lack of data on this issue in the regulatory framework and technical literature is noted. The advantages and disadvantages of the applied technologies of sewer tunnel rehabilitation are given. Recommendations and requirements to the rehabilitation of tunnels are proposed depending on the ground conditions, wear rate, section length, dynamics of wastewater transportation.

Choosing a technology for repairing sewers operated in difficult soil conditions with account of the geometric irregularity of the tunnel sections
Summary
Long-running sewer tunnels in large cities have a degree of deterioration of up to 55% or more. Difficult engineering-geological and hydrogeological conditions for tunnel laying, as well as intense anthropogenic impacts cause an increase in the defect rate of sewer tunnels. Based on calculations and hydraulic modeling, it is shown that with a high load of sewer tunnel networks and the impossibility to stop completely the transportation of effluents, the primary objective in choosing measures for repair and rehabilitation of tunnels is the search for technical solutions that provide for the maximum wastewater flow after the rehabilitation given the cross-section narrowing and geometrically irregular sections. The successful experience of SUE «Vodokanal of St. Petersburg» in the rehabilitation of sewers with narrowing sections without stopping the transportation of wastewater using technologies that meet these requirements is presented.

The experience of operating sewer tunnels in St. Petersburg
Summary
A short description of the sewer tunnels in St. Petersburg, their building conditions, operation and maintenance, safety arrangements during inspection is presented. A portable, mobile diagnostic unit for the inspection of the underwater space of the tunnel has been designed. The measuring part of the unit comprises ultrasonic sensors for underwater space scanning, TV camera with zooming and rotation in different direction, and recorders of the wastewater chemical composition. Scanning the underwater part of the tunnel provides for the information on defects and damages of the tunnel trough and lining, level of silting. Basing on the inspection results the causes of the tunnel and in-line structures failures are determined. In parallel with the tunnel inspections the experts of the St. Petersburg University of Architecture and Civil Engineering carried out an analysis of the hydraulic control of the inspected sections of the tunnels. The results of the inspection and hydraulic control analysis provided the basis for the development of priorities, tunnel repair and rehabilitation activities; allowed improving the integrity of the municipal wastewater disposal system. A short description of the solution of the problem of cleaning the polluted emissions from the sewer and tunnels alongside with the references of the gas cleaning system are presented.

Specific features of sewer tunnel construction and rehabilitation in Saint-Petersburg
Summary
The basic facts about the construction of deep sewer tunnels in Saint-Petersburg are presented. The causes of gas corrosion in sewers and their structural components are considered. The methods of protecting sewer tunnels in the process of construction or rehabilitation from gas corrosion are suggested. At the stage of designing the construction of a new sewer or its rehabilitation the concentration of gases in the underroof space must be measured. On the basis of the calculation data the decision on the sewer design, elevation differences, gradient and other parameters that ensure trouble-free operation is made.
